CITY GUIDES

TREVISO

Treviso is capital of the Veneto area also known as the "Marca trevigiana", the pictoresque area comprised of castles, rivers, hills and vineyards which produce wines of incomparable quality. It's historic old town has a decidedly medieval character, shot through with a thousand canals and waterways. A host of shaded gardens and noble palazzos grace the porticoed sidewalks which line the city's watery avenues. It is no surprise that Treviso has come to be known as a "città sull'acqua", a city with an impenetrable, understated allure.

Jolly gourmets all, the locals show a marked preference for regional wines -- judging by the number of enotecas and tasting rooms in the area, they are not likely to run dry!! Treviso's social center is without doubt the impressive Piazza dei Signori, built upon the ruins of a ancient Roman forum. It is flanked by the city's most monumental edifices, such as the Palazzo Pretorio, la Torre Civica and the Palazzo dei Trecento. The cathedral is the most significant church in Treviso, whose real treasures are housed inside the structure. The Cappella dell'Annunziata for example, is entirely covered with frescoes and great paintings, including one by Titian.

Treviso's true beauty however, lies in the tiny alleyways and porticoed walks which line the canals. The waterways once supplied the city's tanners, papermills and dye works. Not to be missed is the characteristic Fisherman's quarter (quartiere delle Pescherie), on an islet in the Canale Cagnon which hosted the local fish market in Medieval times. The Museo Civico "Luigi Bailo" ( near the former Convento dei Gesuiti, Borgo Cavour 22, Hours: 9-12 and 14-17, Sunday mornings; closed Mondays) is well worth a visit. It contains an impressive section dedicated to archaeology. There is an interesting contemporary art gallery which features sculptures by the Veneto artist Arturo Martini as well as a surprisingly comprehensive paint gallery which documents the history of painting in Veneto and Treviso from Iacopo Bassano to Titian and from Lorenzo Lotto to Tiepolo.
