Traveling Along the River Up until the 17th century, the famed horse-drawn barge immoralized by Goldoni, the Burchiello, was still being used. Today, the enchantment of the past can still be savored by traveling from Venice to Padua by boat, passing through Fusina, Malcontenta, Oriago, Mira, Dolo and Stra. This particular trip combines an ancient boating tradition with the technology and comfort of the year 2000. Each year, from March to October these modern-day burchielli navigate the five locks, nine bridges and eight meters of draught difference along their 44-kilometer course much the way their predecessors did, but with added comfort.
The river trip, paced at a leisurely stroll, is in absolute harmony with the natural surroundings and affords both the time and state of mind neccessary to truly apreciate its beauty. The slow pace and tranquility open up the wealth of history, art and culture which make up this locale once so dear to the hearts of the Venetian aristocracy, poets and scholars alike. |
