Venetian lace making

lace making

As famous as it is precious, the handmade lace of Burano, distinguished by the needlework used to create its delicate patterns and the lace skilfully produced by hand on Pellestrina which is worked stretched across a special pillow. Authentic examples of both are rare and costly, found only in fine specialty shops such as Jesurum, at the Merceria del Capitello, which also carries antique lace.
Lovely, though not authentic, lace and linens are sold on Burano itself, while the at the Scuola dei merletti, the last existing lace-making school in the world (Tel: 041-730034) allows visitors to glimpse the sewers and their handiwork and has a museum where many fine antique pieces have been preserved.
