The village of Vesio is an excellent starting point for
excursions in the Alto Garda Bresciano. The road to Vesio (from
the lake at Limone sul Garda) curves up through terraced olive
groves, forest and finally the cleared slopes of the upper villages.
Vesio is a lovely little place; at 640 m it enjoys sweeping views
of Lake Garda. The following route can be completed by mountain
bike or on foot - the former has become quite popular in recent
years, it is possible to rent bikes in Limone. A car is not necessary
as public bus service runs from Limone to Vesio - check with Limone
tourist office for timetable details.

VESIO (640 m) - SAN MICHELE (635 m)
6km, Easy
From Vesio begin along the asphalt road to Polzone (2km).
Turn right at the signs for San Michele, close to the dairy farm
"Alpe del Garda". Follow this dirt road as it heads
up the Valle of San Michele. A tranquil, forested lane
above a rumbling stream, it is easy to forget that not all that
long ago it was near the front lines of warfare: during the First
World War, the neighboring mountains were part of the Italian
front line against the Austrians. One can see blast holes on some
of the rock faces above the road, arranged so that the road could
be destroyed should the Austrians break through. At the head of
the valley is the hermitage of San Michele, an interesting
12th century chapel with fine views of the valley below and the
steep forested mountains above.
SAN
MICHELE - MALGA PRA DELLE NOCI (688 m) - BOCCA DI NANSESA (1292
m)
4km, Moderate
The road turns to trail past the chapel, ascending easily to the
Malga Pra Delle Noci after 2km, where there is a small
malga, or farmhouse. Here there is a trail intersection; take
a right and wind steeply through tall forest for the next 2+ kilometers,
with increasingly stunning views over the San Michele Valley.
Finally, reach the Bocca di Nansesa, the mountain crest,
where the panorama extends to the great Monte Baldo massif on
the other side of the lake.
BOCCA DI NANSESA - MONTE ZENONE (1424 m) - MALGA PRA DI
TONI (1088 m) - VESIO
7km, Moderate
From the Bocca di Nansesa continue on a now faint track following
the treeless crest of the mountain. After about 2km of steady
climb, reach the summit of Monte Zenone, the highest point
on this excursion, from where the views are stupendous. Descend
to the Malga Pra di Toni; from here it is a curving, steep-at-times
descent back to Vesio.
There are many other excellent route from Vesio - one
should purchase a 1:25000 excursion map from the tourist office
in Limone for more details. Another fine route ascends from Vesio
through the Bondo Valley, climbing some 8km and 600 m vertical
before reaching Passo Not. Nearby are remains of WWI installations
and a tiny, heart-rending war cemetery. From Passo Nota one may
descend the natural tunnel-lined route past Monte Traversole back
to Vesio, or a much longer descent all the way to the lake at
Limone. This second route passes a small lodge, the Baita Segala,
where visitors may pass the night if they wish, before descending
very steeply at times 1,200 m vertical to the lake - bikers and
hikers alike must stay attentive on this route.
