The Alpe di Siusi is an ideal vacation spot for families
with young children or those who would like to take a short stroll
or ski run. It is best accessible by gondola from Ortisei in the
Val Gardena or from Compaccio, up the road from Castelrotto. The
Alpe is exceptionally picturesque, with
quaint wooden farmhouses lining the green plateau which itself
is surrounded by some of the most dramatic peaks in the Dolomiti:
the regal Sasso Lungo and Sasso Piatto, the gothic towers of Il
Catinaccio and the massive Sella and Odle ranges. Many of these
farm buildings have been restored and turned into lovely guesthouses
and restaurants. One could pass a very enjoyable day walking along
one of the trails that crisscross the Alpe, stopping for lunch
at a baita or other converted farm, then either walking back or
taking a
horse-drawn carriage ride. For example, from the top of the ultramodern
high-speed gondola from Ortisei, it is an easy hour or so to Baita
Sanon, which serves excellent fare. On the return one could loop
back up to the gondola or take the carriage ride, whose driver
is dressed in traditional attire.
There are also plenty of opportunities in the Alpe di Siusi
for those who wish a more extensive outing. There are plenty of
mountain rifugi within easy walking distance, within the Sciliar
Park, and in winter the Alpe is very well suited to cross-country
skiing.
