The Trebbia River

It is a great thrill to paddle the waters of the Trebbia River, to swim its swift blue waters, bike or hike above its course or simply relax along its banks at a secluded stretch. The river's unspoiled beauty has attracted a growing number of Italian visitors each year.

Rafting, kayaking or canoeing the Trebbia can be quite exhilarating. While the waterway is rated only Class I (ripples-light rapids) or II (light-medium rapids), these rapids can be very challenging to navigate and a guide is therefore essential for any river outing (except for experts who are familiar with the waterway).
Sports in Open Space, located up the river from Bobbio in Marsaglia, leads rafting, kayaking and canoeing trips on the river (as well as mountain biking and rock-climbing adventures). They guide a fun stretch of the river, from Marsaglia to Bobbio, where there is an excellent series of rapids. Guided trips run from 60.000 L / person.
The company may also be able to organize a moonlit night ride, which can be a spectacular experience: few things match gliding down a star-filled river (i.e. one that reflects a star-filled sky).

Many people come to the river to find a secluded spot for swimming and relaxing. It is not difficult to find a private site, as the river is very winding throughout the Bobbio region - each piece of shore seems isolated from the rest. Often there will be a few cars parked at the entrance to one of the nice stretches of river. From here follow the probably somewhat steep trail down to the river - if there are people in the vicinity continue walking along the banks until you find a secluded spot. In addition to sunbathing, one can have a fine stroll along the shores of the river, surrounded by pure blue water and fine river cliff formations. Swimming is the activity of choice here, and there are plenty of pools to explore (not deep enough for diving, however). One could also try tubing or simply floating down the river, though it can be quite shallow in places; one must scope the river before floating ahead of time.

Finally, hiking and biking near the Trebbia River is very nice, as one can follow one of the ancient trade routes that connected Piacenza and Genoa, now well-marked trails. From Bobbio, a fine loop can be made: hike across the scenic bridge over the Trebbia River, then ascend steadily to the well-conserved village of Ferrari (673 m). Continue to the equally fine abodes of Santa Cecilia and Fontana (714 m), descending to Bobbio via Bradaglione and a couple clusters of homes. Advanced mountain bikers could also complete this route. Those looking for a full day's outing can continue south from Fontana to Coli, the Grotte di San Michele (caves), Passaggio della Croce (977 m), from where there are fine views to the river below, and Monte Zuccaro (1074 m) before descending to Marsaglia. From Marsaglia there are buses back to Bobbio; the incredibly keen can hike back on the other side of the river. For road bikers, one option is to head up from Bobbio to Vaccarezza, north to Cadelmonte then turn right (east) to Schiavi, Mezzano Scotti and along the Trebbia back to Bobbio. Real adventurers can follow Route 45 up near the source of the Trebbia River and finish at the Mediterranean Sea! This would be an extremely long day - one should break up the excursion into two or three days. The area is worth experiencing at a more leisurely pace.

To get to Bobbio by car, one must follow Route 45 up from Piacenza for about an hour; for those without their own transport there is public bus service from Piacenza.
