There are many other interesting hiking routes in the
vicinity of the Punta Marguareis. Instead of returning to the
Rifugio Garelli via the Colle del Pas, one could complete an
interesting three-day loop: Descending from Rifugio Barbera
into France, return to Italy via the Colle della Boaria, where
the hillsides burst with color from rhododendron and other flowers
in spring. Then head back to the Rifugio Garelli via the Conca
della Carsene. On this route the second overnight would be at
the Rifugio Barbera or the Rifugio Morgantini (above the Colle
della Boaria).
Another
excellent, though difficult excursion would be to hike from
Limone Piemonte, Italy, and finish in Tende, France. Regular
trains connect the two towns, which are themselves connected
(by train and road) to Cuneo in the north and Nice/Ventimiglia
in the south; thus they are convenient bases for walks in the
region. For the fit climber Limone is an ideal starting point:
one could climb up through the tiny villages of San Giovanni
and Maire Valletta to the Colle Boaria, then to Rif. Barbera
for the evening, or instead pass several small settlements and
sheep herds to the Punta Melasso, eventually reaching the Rif.
Garelli via the Conca delle Carsene. The following day (from
either Rif. Barbera or Garelli), one could climb the Punta Marguareis,
then enjoy a long, beautiful descent to Tende through the Réfrei
Valley, passing through a fine forest and several ancient settlements
along the way.
A less strenuous alternative would be to begin at the Rifugio
del Parco in the Parco Naturale Alta Valle Pesio e Tanaro, then
finish either in Limone or Tende.
For all of these routes it is recommended to bring a good
topographical map of the region, preferably of 1:25000 clarity;
one can obtain these maps in Cuneo, Limone, or Tende. One should
also call ahead to reserve a place at the rifugi, and to make
they are open - they usually are open from late spring to early
fall.
