About the Author:
As coordinator of Trekking Italia's U.S programs, David Leibowitz works to bring student groups to Italy to appreciate both the cultural and natural beauty of the country; more often than not the two are found side by side. On Trekking Italia's programs, for example, a group may tour Florence for several days, staying at the homes of Italian high school students, but also walk through the vineyards of Chianti, the Apuane Alps above Carrara, or the Cinque Terre coastal villages on the same tour. Trekking Italia's programs may be custom-built for each school. For more information on their school programs or those for adults please contact the U.S. office of Trekking Italia, 1-800-295-2215 or trekkingitalia@excite.com. At their main office in Italy, please contact Raffaello Mosca, 02-8372838 or info@trekkingitalia.com.

Vibrant Valtellina
Many of the valleys off of Lake Como have little in the way of arable land. The greatest is the east-west running Valtellina.

The Garfagnana
