TRAPANI Don't miss this!
Erice. In a splendid location atop a rocky hillside over Trapani, this was a sacred place in ancient times. Today, there are the remains of a medieval castle with narrow alleyways, flower-bedecked houses and quiet courtyards. And lots of restaurants. Segesta and Selinunte. Two sites of archeological interest among the most significant and attractive in Sicily. Segesta (35 km. from Trapani), is located along the greenest of roadways, graced by a remarkably well-preserved Greek temple dating back to 500 BC, and a Greek theater with a gorgeous view. A bit farther on is Selinunte (92 km. from Trapani): three impressive Greek temples from the 5th century BC rise up into the horizon atop a cliff alongside the remains of an acropolis and its impressive fortification. Egadi Islands. Access by boat or hydrofoil from Trapani. The main island, Favignana (the others islands are: Marettimo and Levanzo), guards a gracious little village. For those who love the sea, the boat trip around the island is a must, as well as the boat ride to nearby Levanzo. |
