Cruising the Alps:
Sports Facilities
Madonna di Campiglio

Madonna di Campiglio
Once the hunting preserve of the Hapsburg Royal family,
it is now an elegant winter
sports resort set in a basin, framed by the peaks of the Adamello-Brenta
park mountains, on the highest part of the Rendena valley. It is considered
the "European cross-roads of winter sports" and is linked to the
Folgarida and Marilleva resorts. Most of the lifts are new and very fast.
Although the town itself does not hold up to the spectacular scenery surrounding
it, it does offer quite good night-life.
The slopes
The skiing area is divided between the Spinale, Grostè (large sunny
terrace) and Pradalago areas, which boasts the longest ski run. The most
panoramic one is that of the 5 lakes, where the famous 3Tre (3Three) World
Cup slalom is held.
Break-points
Half way down the slopes of the Spinale there is the Montagnoli alpine shelter,
a rustic place with wood interiors where, besides serving the specialties
of the Trentino, they also offer excellent grilled meats, garlic salami,
the typical "sbressa" cheese and exquisite Trentino "grappa"
(eau-de-vie made from schnapps marc and Enzian-Thresl gentian). It can also
be reached at night on a snow caterpillar.
Dog-sledding
On the slopes of Campo Carlomagno, in the vicinity of the Grostè
alpine shelter, along the Melederio valley and on the white peaks of the
Nambino, adventure rides on dog-sleds, like on the icy Alaskan expanses.
Pulled by huskies, the "treggie", as sleds are called here, travel
far into the back-country. The sledding excursions are organized by the
Graffer Alpine Shelter: please contact the Tourist Office.
