Cruising the Alps:
The Resort
Livigno

Hotels
The most elegant hotel in Livigno is the Golf Hotel Parč
(Via Gerus 1, ph: 0342-97.02.63,). The hotel, which has 40 stylishly
furnished rooms, stands in a panoramic position. The Bucaneve
(strada statale 301, ph: 0342-996201, fax 0342-997588) is looking at
the wonderful Spoel Valley. All the rooms are very charming.
There are two classic hotels in Livigno, the Alpina, which stands
in the heart of town (Via Bondi 3, ph: 0342-996007, Fax: 0342-996350),
and the Hotel Livigno (Via Osteria 103, ph: 0342-996104) founded
in 1912.
Gourmand stops
The absolutely best meal in Livigno is to be had at the Passatore
(ph: 0342-997221,. It is a short distance from the town, located in
a two-level building furnished with wood tables and a "stube",
a room with a typical Tirolean wood-burning stove. Here one can taste
the typical Valtellina cuisine, such as the "pizzoccheri"
(buck wheat noodles with cheese and potatoes), the "polenta
taragna" (buck wheat and corn polenta with the local magnuca
cheese), "sciatt" (buck wheat griddlecake filled with
the local "Bitto" cheese and soaked in "grappa"
eau-de-vie) and also some good dishes from the Romagna region, the owner's
place of origin. The service is thoughtful. The restaurant also offers
an excellent choice of wines, among which the local Inferno and
Sassella. In the basement there is an excellent pizza restaurant.
The Pioda is another characteristic restaurant(Via Saroch 136,
ph: 0342-997610). The price-quality ratio is very convenient. Besides
the typical "sciatt" (buck wheat griddlecake filled
with the local "Bitto" cheese and soaked in "grappa"
eau-de-vie) and "pizzoccheri" (buck wheat noodles with
cheese and potatoes), there are buck wheat ravioli with alpine mushrooms
and excellent beef cooked on the "pioda", the red-hot
stone which gives the restaurant its name. The corn, barley and vegetable
soups are also noteworthy. The dry and sour Valtellina wines, like the
Sassella and Grumello, go well with these dishes.
Leisure time
The cocktail meeting-place of expert skiers and regulars is the Tea del
Vidal at the foot of the Mottolino, which is also a good restaurant and
a tranquil night-club.
Shopping
Thanks to an edict issued by Napoleon in 1805, Livigno is a tax-free town.
One can purchase cigarettes, liquor, cameras cashmere sweaters and many
other goods at very convenient prices. However that which counts in Livigno
is quantity more than the quality of the products. At the Casa della Bresaola
(Via Trepalle) there is a wide choice of charcuterie and gourmand
delicacies. Mottini Sport (Via Osteria 105) is one of the
best stocked sports shop.
