In Selva, in Val Gardena, the modern and highly practical Sporthotel Alpenroyal deserves mention. It offers a wide array of services geared toward health, sports and relaxation. The rooms are large and light, the pool enclosed. The bar boasts a fireplace and piano. The newest addition is the department for health and beauty, the Beauty Center Eghes, which offers a Cleopatra bath and a straw body soak in addition to the classic mud-pack. The cuisine includes many vegetarian and diet dishes, but that by no means precludes a gala dinner or two, regional dining events or an outdoor grill! And speaking of outdoors, the area is great for cross-country skiing, close to the Dolomite Superski circuit and there's even a brand-new ice-skating rink nearby.

Gourmand stops

The "stube" of the Hotel Adler (ph: 0471-796203) is the most elegant place in town, and presents excellent quality with respect to local tradition.
The Genziana Hotel restaurant, on Ortisei's main piazza, (ph: 0471-797598) has been recently renovated with cozy and warm wood paneling. It serves traditional dishes prepared with great care. Among the specialties: deer medallions and home-made pasta with porcini mushrooms.
In the direction of Passo Gardena, near Selva, there is Gerard (ph: 0471-795274) which presents typical Upper Adige specialties: "strangolapreti" (spinach gnocchi), "canederli" (dumplings) and game when in season.
A very pictoresque stube is Trattoria all'Uva in Via Rezia. Reserve the day before because it's a very small place. Last but not least, the Ristorante Pizzeria Mar Dolomiti (near the Ski School) is worth a mention: it's a confortable, informal restaurant with very good food, and great service.

Shopping

Both sacred and profane wood sculptures are a typical craft of Val Gardena; many in the population of ski instructors of the area are in fact wonderful artisans in the summer months. Albert Comploi, Josef Bernardi, and Conrad Moroder are three of many talented craftsmen in Ortisei. In their shops they also sell wooden toys and painted or raw wood statues.

Leisure time

In Ortisei, the Igloo, inside a glass dome, with good music and cocktails, is the place where everyone meets. In the Mauriz dance hall local town band plays live music. In Selva the most fashionable place to go after skiing is Luisi Keller's.
