Parco Archeologico della Neapoli (Archeological Park)

Archeological Park

The park constitutes a rare collection of impressive monuments and structures executed between the 4th-5th centuries B.C. and the time of the Roman Empire.
Visitors are presently allowed access to the Teatro Greco, the Roman amphitheater with its subterranean facilities, and even to part of the spectacular Latomia del Paradiso, the largest of the quarries used to provide the building material for the ancient Greek city.
The quarry's somewhat severe beauty leaves a haunting impression, softened by the surrounding orange groves.
In one corner of the Latomia del Paradiso is the l'Orecchio di Dionisio (Dionysis's ear), a grotto of some 65 meters with eerie acoustical properties. The grotto takes its name from its shape, which recalls the human ear.

The Catacombs of San Giovanni

The Catacombs

The catacombs near the cathedral complex of S. Giovanni Evangelista represent the largest underground Paleo-Christian necropolis on the island. The burial site formed an enlargement of an existing Greek aqueduct carved into the rock.
It was violated on a number of occasions by scavengers hunting for relics and treasure.
After touring the catacombs, visitors would do well to walk through the gardens at Villa Reimann.
