Continuing
along the Valsesia road, the next point of interest is Varallo,
famous for its Sacro Monte which comprises no less than 44 chapels
adorned one and all with statues and frescoes. Local products include
Tome della Valsesia cheeses, sheep prosciuttini and mortadella di
fegato (liverwurst). Passing Varallo, the landscape becomes quite
Alpine, dominated by the Sesia River. It is one of Italy's major
rivers, beloved by water-sprot fans who practice canoing, rafting
or take lessons at any of the many schools lining its banks. The
road ends in Alagna, at the foot of the majestic Monte Rosa. It
is a very special little village still marked by the charm of its
early inhabitants, the Walser, a fascinating folk of German origin
who wandered here in the 12th century after a long trek from the
vallies of Switzerland. The antique Walser houses are a star attraction,
while traditional costumes can be admired in the Museo Walser di
Pedemonte, located in a wooden house dating back to 1628.
