NAPOLI For the Eyes
by Roberta Ceudek

That Napoli has eye-appeal is evidenced by the many "belvedere" (visual delights) sprinkled throughout the city's highest reaches. The Montesanto funicular goes all the way up to S.Martino, where visitors can feast their eyes on the most famous view of the Gulf of Naples. The nearby La Certosa and Museo di S.Martino are without doubt worth a visit.

View the Castel dell'Ovo in the glow of the setting sun for an incomparable experience. One of the best look-out posts is also the city's best hotel, Grande Albergo Vesuvio (via Partenope, 45, tel. 081-7640044).
The visual adventure that is Napoli is accented by the colors and bustling activity of its narrow alleyways. Walk through towards the Quartieri spagnoli, where your glance will be immediately captured by the many contrasting images - the clear blue of the sky, here and there a window straining to peep through laundry hung out to dry; narrow buildings squeezed tightly among an amazing assortment of plumbing. The quarter owes its origins to the Spanish viceroy Toledo who quartered troops there until 1600.
On a cross-street of Via Toledo, try Ciro a Santa Brigida (via Santa Brigida 71/74, tel. 081-5524072, closed on SUNDAY) for a great meal in an optimal restaurant, notable for the fact that it's been making pizza for over 200 years.

You can go ahead exploring Napoli by taste, smell, sound, touch and return to the maps.
