Town of remarkable historical interest which, in spite of its Roman and
medieval remains, it is important especially for the extremely rare evidence of the
Lombards who settled here for two centuries. Framed by the Alps whose view is very beautiful from the top of the
castle which stands just in the middle of town. The architecture of the palaces and
monuments is very influenced by the Venetian gothic style.
Trieste is a truly unique city: situated at the easternmost tip of Italy, it has always been influenced by mid European culture, art and values -and its citizens have always felt to belong there. Joyce has had a long love affair with this city, at times harsh and unwelcoming, as when the terrible wind Bora whistles by at more than 100 mi./hr; at times sweet and reassuring in its calm decadence, and splendid isolation from the rest of Italy. |
