Matera

The town is famous for its "sassi" (stones): the "sassi di Matera" are the typical houses dug directly into the mountain, and constructed with the rock material itself. Situated in an inextricable maze of narrow lanes and steps, sometimes resting on the underlying houses, these dwellings are not used anymore -their abandon dates back decades, not centuries!- but they are a peculiar and unique attraction for tourists.
Not to be missed: The Cathedral in Apulian-Romanesque style standing on a rocky spur, and the panoramic road with views on the "Sassi".
