The Quarries of Maiano
by David Walthall

In Florence, a city full of artistic treasures, an equally stunning jewel is the countryside which beckons just outside the city gates. Florence is indeed blessed with a varied topography in the rolling Chianti hills to the south and the slopes of the Apennine Range to the north. On these first northern rises lie the beautiful Cave di Maiano, the stone quarries which for centuries have supplied the raw materials for the city's master artisans. The hills of Prato are home to a dark green marble that was used for the elegant facades of Florentine buildings such as the cathedral and the church of Santa Croce.
