Useful
information:
Reaching the archipelago is not such an easy task! Ferries or
airplanes will get you as far as Olbia on the Sardinian coast,
then a bus will carry you the remaining 36 km. to Palau,
where numerous ferries depart for La Maddalena. All the other
islands can be reached by boat.
Hotels:
The archipelago does not offer a great many options in terms of
accommodations: one of the best is the Hotel Cala Lunga
on La Maddalena in Porto Massimo. (ph. 0789-734042, fax 0789-734033,
open May-Oct).
On the coast, there's the Hotel Capo d'Orso near Palau,
in a beautiful setting. ( 36 rooms and 26 apartments, ph. 0789-702000,
fax 0789-702009).
If you're looking for the very, very best in Italian hotels, you'd
be well-advised to stay on the Costa Smeralda. Porto Cervo
and its surroundings represent one of the most exclusive (and
most expensive!) localities in all Italy, whose hotels are open
only from June to September. Among these are the Hotel Cervo
& Conference Center, in the village proper (ph. 0789-931111,
fax 0789-931613); the romantic Pitrizza, 3 km. from the
village in a priceless setting (tel. 0789-930111, fax 0789-930611),
the Romazzino, 8 km. from the village (half-pension only,
ph. 0789-977111, fax 0789-96292) and the Cala di Volpe,
7 km. away (half-pension only, ph. 0789-976111, fax 0789-976617).
