SARDINIA
ARCIPELAGO DELLA MADDALENA

Italy's Island Paradise

by Marina Miari

SARDINIA

Anchored a ways offshore from the Costa Smeralda, in a sea often stirred by mistral winds, the magical Maddalena archipelago holds its own against the elements. This extraordinary group of uncontaminated islands has long been known as the "Polynesia of Italy". It is quite simply a beautiful sight, set as it is upon waters of turquoise and blue, bordered by the whitest of beaches and Mediterranean shrubs.
To conserve this unique natural environment, the Arcipelago della Maddalena has been made a National Park.

The island chain consists of a group of islands and rocky protrusions sculpted by the wind, whose combined surface is not even 50 square kilometers.
The colors of the sea and sky defy description. The brisk wind (often quite strong) keep fog and mists away. This is the perfect place for scuba fans and avid sailors (not necessarily for beginners...). A bit crowded in summer, the Maddalena archipelago is much more delightful in the off-season, particularly in the spring when nature explodes into vibrant bloom (what a shame most of the hotels are closed...)
