Pulse of the Fashion Scene




A little after-dinner music? Something a little different? Something special? This pulse point of the fashion scene is always full, frequented by creative professionals, models and advertising people. It is characterized by Framed partitions lit by innumerable tiny lights, velvet and by its many small tables and chairs. You can get a bite to eat quite late, the crowd permitting! This restaurant/ bar is very popular--a sort of old Manhattan style magnet drawing in America fans. It is full of character, housed in an old warehouse on the Navigli. The surroundings are soft and romantic. The prices don't bite, either, whether you're having dinner or just an aperitif to the sound of jazz surrounded by the red brick walls with a slate on the wall listing the daily specials. Tex-mex meat, fish and salads. 150 cocktails, 65 whisky sorts, 30 kinds of tequila and 30 different rums. Opulent brunch buffet 12:00-16:00, £ 34.500.

Full-to-bursting Irish pub with diverse music and a wide selection of international beers. Frequented by "real " Irishmen involved in weighty darts tournaments. Card reading free of charge on Wednesday nights.

Of all the fitness temples in Milano, the Club Francesco Conti has the most fashionable discos, "l'Hollywood". The venue, especially popular among university students, is distinguished by the crowds gathered outside the door. Getting in is quite an accomplishment. Guests dance away on the tabletops while the bartenders maintain a continuous light show.

The Old Fashion is a super bar, ever "in". Located in the protective shadow of the Triennale, Palazzo dell'Arte, on the grounds of the Parco Sempione, the bar is the traditional meeting point for the fashion crowd, especially on Tuesdays. Special features? Happy hour aperitifs, restaurant, pizzeria at the dinner hour, disco-bar with funky and acid jazz music in the evenings. Unbearably, infernally hot on summer evenings, the dance floor is moved outside, lit by starlight and torches.

Grand Café Fashion

Formerly the ticket office of the Municipal Transport Authority, the offices are now a postmodern and Baroque bar, with a breathtaking view of the city's traffic. Frequented by foreigners and creative types. Serves snacks, sushi and original drinks with rock and pop music in the background.

Capolinea

The story of jazz in Milano. Live music and a restaurant, too! All the greats have played here from the 50's until today, the most celebrated and loved of which was Chet Baker. Every night is a concert featuring either Dixieland, New Orleans, be-bop, hard-bop or fusion. A bit of advice: stay until the bitter end - it could well happen that a jam session breaks out on the floor.

Originally a tabacco shop, it's now a pub with cultural discussions wafting through the air, full at every hour of the day. A must stop for Milano-by-night explorer. The bar is on the ground floor, restaurant open late is located on the first floor. closed circuit TV lends a post-modern touch. A keyboard is provided for impromptu performances, art decks the walls. Event night are scheduled weekly. A Beach Party, for example, is held on Tuesdays. Exhibitions and gatherings are frequent diversions here.

Over the last ten years, Gianni Coco has cultivated what is perhaps most important meeting point for international musicians in Milano. Each month presents a new and interesting program for music lovers. Generally speaking, jazz and fusion are on the bill from Monday through Thursday, with rock/blues performers on Fridays and Saturdays. Don't miss concerts by the up and coming young Italian jazzman Carlo Fava if you can help it!

Sayonara

An extremely elegant and refined piano bar. Frequented by the Milanese jetsetters under the motto "the very best of everything". Excellent pianists, elite cuisine. Each whiskey is served with it's own soda. The bartender mixing drinks at the table. Select clientele, survivable prices. Lovely spacious veranda with awning in summer. The atmosphere is colonial par excellence: Persian carpets, 18th-century lamps, manaus chairs, bonsai, exotic plants, hand-blown glasses and Royal Burton plates.
