Built in 1114, the cathedral was completely restored by Giuseppe
Zimbalo (1659-70).
 |
The secondary facade is typical,
more decorative, and opens onto the square. The interior houses
remarkable wooden and papier-machè statues. The pictoresque entrance
facing onto the square is a fabulous classic gateway designed
by Emanuele Manieri. |
The bell tower on the east side of the square stands some 70
meters high, comprising 5 stories diminishing in size, crowned by
a dome. For visual effect, the Cathedral, erected in 1659 by Giuseppe
Zimbalo on the site of the Romanic one, by order of the bishop Pappacoda
, presents a very sober main front and a false sidefront, which is
opposite to the square.
| Inside the cathedral, don't miss
the large, imposing paintings by Oronzo Tiso in the main altar
apse. The 16th- century "Presepe" by Gabriele Riccardi is enchanting
as well, on the altar of the Annunziata. |
 |
The backdrop of the square is fascinating thanks to the bishop's
palace, restored by Manieri in the 18th century.
On its right is the Seminary Palace, built on the architect
Giuseppe Cino's design by order of the bishops Michele and Fabrizio
Pignatelli. It is a building of a particular elegance. Characteristic
is its facade, which is covered by smooth ashlars and shows a lovely
loggia with three arches on the top of the portal.
