Lampedusa: enchanted land
between the sky and the sea

It is said that the sea tortoise brings luck, prosperity and longevity. It is then fitting that "Carretta Carretta" tortoises have chosen the beautiful and tranquil beaches of Lampedusa to lay their eggs. The WWF is going to great lengths to protect and defend the hatching area.
Lampedusa is an island in the Pelagie group, between Pantelleria, the Tunisian coast and the island of Malta.
The farthest point of southern Europe, seemingly a bit of Africa snapped off from the rest, is an arid and rocky lick of land, baked white, gold and red under the sun. Its craggy profile casts a strange reflection in the incredibly clear blue-green waters of the surrounding sea.
Lampedusa, the marvelous isle, African body with an Italian heart beating with all the passion of Sicily. Its inhabitants are people of the sea, frank and hospitable.
Its jagged coastline presents endless surprises, interesting to the eye and delightful to explore, with its bays, coves and idyllic crevices of green.

L'isola dei Conigli is the spot most frequented by tourists. It has a wide bay and is accessible by land as well, by means of a donkey trail navigable only on foot.
Its beach, known as the Vallone dello Scoglio, is the broadest on the island, surrounded by crystalline shallows ideal for swimming, snorkeling and floating lazily in the sun. Here in this undisturbed and uncontaminated nature, Domenico Modugno (a couple of his hits: "Nel blu dipinto di blu" and "Volare") built his lovely villa.
At certain times of the year, in August particularly, it is possible to observe huge numbers of dolphins performing to the delight of swimmers.
It is difficult not to eat well in Italy and the island offers a number of quality restaurants, notably the "Tommasino" di Cala Guitgia, with its array of specialties prepared of fresh local fish.
It is also possible to sample the same seafood delicacies the "La Cambusa", where chef Totò is not only a splendid restaurateur, but an able entertainer as well. La Cambusa consists of a terrace area at the shoreline, where it's possible to take a leisurely after-dinner stroll under the moonlight after enjoying an optimal fish cous cous.
