The island is divided into six communities, which include:
Ischia Porto, rising from an isolated precipice connected to the island by a 15th-century bridge, is easily the most densely frequented as well as the most fun of the six communities, with its splendid Aragonese castle.

Forio, on the west coast of the island, was "discovered" in the 1950's by American writers such as Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. Obligatory is the lovely walk along the Soccorso, a steep promontory watched over by a little white chapel. From this balcony seat, visitors can admire the splendid Citara beach, which traces the edge of a rocky cliff base. Also, the marvelous La Mortella Garden is not to be missed! |
There is also Lacco Ameno, which debuted in the 1960's thanks to director Luchino Visconti who made his nest there -- indeed calling the residence La Colombaia. The Museo Archeologico di Villa Arbusto is most interesting (located near the San Montano cemetary). It's worth the walk up to the Monte Vico summit to enjoy the view.
Sant'Angelo is an ancient, tiny fishing village on a rocky peninsula that is now dedicated to the tranquil and very private holiday-making of the elite.
