RESTAURANTS IN MANTOVA
| Il Cigno Trattoria dei Martini P.za Carlo d'Arco, 1 Ph.: 0376-327101 Closed: Mondays and Tuesdays Simple but attentive service in a dining room redolent of culture and distant memories. The entrance features a set of enormous lovely antique mirrors. Recommended first courses: bigoli pancetta e fagioli (pasta with bacon and beans), tagliatelle con anatra (noodles with duck), uova al piatto con burro, parmigiano e balsamico (eggs with butter, parmasan and balsam vinegar), rognone di vitello trifolato (veal kidneys with garlic and parsely), piccione (squab), faraona (guinea fowl), cappone (capons). The home-style desserts here are famed and the wine cellar extensive. Osteria dei Canossa Vicolo Albergo, 3 Ph.: 0376-221750 Closed: Wednesdays anD Thursdays Optimal value for money in this elegant little place in the city center. The food is satisfying from antipasti to polenta with local salami. First courses, however, are a real treat ranging from agnoli in brodo (lamb in broth) to cappone (capon) and fabulous tortelli di zucca (pumpkin-filled pasta). Seconds follow suit with faraona farcita di amaretti con dadolata di verdure in agrodolce (guinea hen stuffed with amaretti served with sweet and sour diced vegetables), formaggio grana con mostarda in foglie (a cheesey, puff-pastry delight with spicy sauce). Desserts are a bit of a disappointment, the wine list adequate. The atmosphere is elegant. Ochina bianca Via Finzi, 2 Ph.: 0376 323700 Closed: Mondays all day and Tuesdays at lunch Intimate atmosphere. This restaurant shines in local Mantovan specialties. A complete regional menu would include something like peperoni ripieni di pesce di fiume con salsa di pomodoro (bell peppers stuffed with freshwater fish in tomato sauce), tortelli di zucca (pumpkin-filled pasta), luccio in salsa (pike in a special sauce), coniglio alla porchetta con peperoncini ripieni ( rabbit with stuffed peppers), ice cream with zabibbo sauce made of tiny raisins. The wine list extensive and well laid-out. |
