To the beach!
Take a cable car down to the beautiful beaches of Mazzaro. Once coastal,
put on your boogie shoes and head to Naxos, where the Greek ruins are
cool and the nightlife is hot.
To the hills
Hikers will enjoy the town of Castelmola, altitude 529 meters and
population 1,100. This midevil hamlet above Taormina offers multiple
routes for exploration of the backcountry. Particularily nice is the
trail up Mt. Venere, which begins in the parking area just below town.
Enjoy striking views of Taormina, Mt. Etna, and the expansive sea
below. Observe also the locals in their daily tasks, such as the fish
vendor who steers his mechanized cart up from the ocean and sets up
shop in the square. Frequent buses link Taormina and Castelmola, or
the more adventurous may walk up along the well marked paths between
the two towns.

Curiosities
Among the many protagonists who have graced the stage of the Greek
theater, no other is as dramatic as Mount Etna itself. At 3,323 meters,
Etna dominates the topography of Eastern Sicily with its sheer size
and dominates the popular imagination with its restless cone, prone
to glow red hot at night. A safe distance of thirty kilometres separates
Taormina and the mountain, making Etna a pleasant day trip from the
town. Local tour operators offer frequent trips to the mountain. Hikers
should try the extensive trail network across the ancient lava fields.
Remember to pick up the pace if your boots start to heat up.
Whatever your passions, Taormina will enchant you. The soothing climate,
friendly locals, beautiful sights, and tasty food make it a gateway
to the splendor of Sicily.
