CITY GUIDES

VERONA

Birthplace of Romeo and Juliet, "there is no world outside the walls of Verona" wrote William Shakespeare.

In spite of its rapid and brilliant commercial growth, the city has maintained the fascinating allure of its past which is concentrated in the lively and pictoresque Piazza delle Erbe, the elegant piazza dei Signori, Sant'Anastasia boasting the Pisanello masterpiece "St.George and the Drago", the 16th-century gardens of  Palazzo Giusti and the temple of the northern Roman Empire: the church of San Zeno.

The various styles of architecture provide a diversity of perspectives and visual emotions, -Romanico, Gothic, Renaissance- which surprise the eye at every turn.

Traditional homeland of beautiful women, Verona has also become home to great opera over the last decade due to its classic productions at the Arena, one of the most significant of surviving Roman amphitheaters. It's also a city with a lively cultural life, thanks to the shows put on at Castelvecchio, elegantly restored by artists Afro and Tobia Scarpa.
