CITY GUIDES

TRIESTE

Trieste, surrounded on three sides by the Karst plateau, is fascinatingly beautiful because of the blend between the yellow of its limestone rocks, the light blue of the sea and the green of the neighboring hills.

Castle of San Giusto and the Roman Theater witness its old origins. The church of San Giusto on the contrary is the most important medieval monument in town, created by putting together two pre-existing Romanesque basilicas. All streets are permeated with recollections and historical memories: both the alleys leading to the ancient suburbs and the elegant, neoclassical city center streets.

But Trieste is also a maritime town overlooking the gulf of the Adriatic Sea: its port, which is the third-biggest in the Mediterranean, and Canal Grande, are an evidence of it. From Piazza Unità d'Italia, the very city center, you can walk along Molo (pier) Audace which is a traditional and panoramic walk on the sea- front. You cannot miss Castle of Miramare which, situated on a rock opposite the light blue sea, offers some very striking sunsets.
