CITY GUIDES
TORINO
| Attractive in its elegant urban sophistication, the city is a checkerboard of
large piazzas and straight avenues. Torino is the industrial capital of the province, site
of Fiat and related automobile industries. In addition to numerous baroque "palazzi", the city boasts the world's second largest Egyptian museum, the first being in Cairo. The Museum of Modern Art, the Lingotto (formerly the FIAT auto factory, now renovated by Renzo Piano with hotel, museums, fairs, university, shop arcades, that make it a second city center) and the recently restored Palazzo Bricherasio often provide venues for many significant exhibitions. Dignified and aristocratic, the city has experienced a dynamic cultural awakening over the last few years (the Festival of Young Filmmakers, art and photography exhibitions, book fairs). For Italian writer Italo Calvino "Torino is a place from which on can embark
upon long journeys of the mind."
