CITY GUIDES
SIENA
| Twice a year -in July and in August- Siena goes crazy with Palio, the historical,
and often dramatic horse race that takes place in Piazza del Campo. All year-round, this
medieval jewel is on top of the list as a favourite Italian destination. Siena
is without doubt Tuscany's purest example of medieval XIV-century architecture. Its
compactness and uniform style are truly unique, from shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, to the
web of tiny medieval streets that take to historical palaces, surely worth a stroll:
Palazzo Sansedoni, Palazzo d'Elci, Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Chigi-Saracini, Tolomei,
Salimbeni; and to churches rich with frescoes and paintings by the most illustrious Tuscan
masters: Duccio da Boninsegna, il Sassetta, Simone Martini. |
