CITY GUIDES
ROMA - ROME
| 2000 years of "dolce vita". The great city is getting set to celebrate
its jubilee. It's a city guaranteed to wear out anyone who wasn't born there (or who isn't
at least a naturalized citizen...). Tourists sway between feelings of love for the incredible ancient Roman city, renaissance and baroque, sensual and fantastic, and feelings of white-hot hatred for a city which defies all rules, schedules and norms of social conduct. Understandable perhaps, when one considers the number of governing bodies and administrators with a hand in running the city. Rome is an open-air museum, with its imperial forums, the Colosseum, the
Campodoglio, Castel St. Angelo and the Vatican museums. A city geared to life out of
doors, to a life lived amidst parks, ancient streets, historical stairways. Or, indeed, a
life underground, among the catacombs of San Sebastiano and San Callisto.
