PARMA
| Parma is famous all over the world as one of the most vital cultural and art
centers in Italian history. "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi, "La Certosa di
Parma" by Stendhal, Correggio and Parmigianino works of art have made the emilian
town famous during the centuries. Founded by the Romans, Parma had some truly flourishing historical periods. The first one was the period of the medieval free states, when the center of the town as it is now, with the most beautiful monuments such as the Cathedral and the Baptistery - the greatest examples of the Romanesque architecture - with the famous Correggio's frescoes, was built. The second was during the 16th century when it became the capital of the Farnese duchy: other fine monuments (Palazzo della Pilotta, the churches of the Madonna della Steccata and San Giovanni Evangelista) were built to embellish the town. Today's Parma keeps the tone of a small capital. It is the seat of high-level
cultural institutions: the University and the National Art Gallery, and it has a lively
musical life which pivots on the Teatro Regio.
