CITY GUIDES
PALERMO
| Palermo, situated on the gulf having the same name, in the Conca d'Oro, is
surrounded by a fascinating landscape, bordered by very large inland orchards, and its
coast is full of still unspoiled inlets. The best seasons to visit Palermo are spring,
when all the citrus plantations and the orchards are in blossom, and summer, when tourists
pour onto its coast. The city is two-faceted, the Arabo-norman soul and the
baroque, superimposed during the Bourbon reign. The most significant examples of the
Norman facet are the Palace of Normans with the Palatine Chapel, the church of St. john of
the Hermits, the Pisan Tower, the Martorana or church of St. Mary of the Admiral. Fine
examples of Sicilian baroque are the church of Saint Joseph of the Teatini and the one of
Jesus besides Piazza Vigliena with its statues and fountains. Palazzo Abatellis, Villa
Bonanno and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi are, on the contrary, fine examples of
gothic architecture, both civil and religious. The Cathedral and the bizarre Fontana
Pretoria are worth a visit too. |
