Lecce rises out of the broad plain on the spur of a peninsula.
Just miles from the Adriatic beaches and the Ionic coast, Lecce is
more than a beach resort -- it is also a most singular example of
a Baroque styling. Local materials have given a unique turn to classic
Baroque invention. The intricate stone inlay work was crafted of the
Salento area's friable porous volcanic tufa, which lends a curious
light to the finished works. As regards its reputation as conservator
of its natural and artistic wealth, Lecce claims a superior position
to many of its southern confederates. This distinction extends to
the graciousness and sophistication of its inhabitants, as well as
its prosperity.
It is a city with a noble history which still pulses throughout its
streets today.
