CITY GUIDES
FIRENZE - FLORENCE
| The city is famed for the aristocratic beauty of its monuments and art. Not for
nothing is it referred to as "the pearl of the Arno". The cradle of Humanism and the Renaissance, it is an important cultural center and home to a great deal of more sophisticated artisanry. It suffers, however, under its weighty history and the constant influx of tourists. It is often a difficult city, frought with chaotic traffic conditions, a shortage of taxis and buses which are never on time, and a largely snobbish population. Over recent years, the fine shopping streets of Florentine high-society have been invaded by pizzerias, shoe shops, sandwich bars and tacky window displays. But the mythical Florence of the Medicis still remains. Giotto's bell-tower and the Uffizi, the Duomo, the hidden pockets of the Florence of the past, untouched by the tourist river: Bellosguardo or around via del Salviatino, for example. Firenze may give strangers the cold shoulder, but it is, after all, the city of
Giotto, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Paolo Uccello, Ghirlandaio and Beato Angelico. |
