The cathedral is the main medieval monument in town and it overlooks the square having the same name; Castle Estense ranks number two for importance and its imposing mass is surrounded by a moat . There are many renaissance palaces worth visiting dating back to the Este period: Palazzo Schifanoia, Palazzo di Ludovico il Moro, Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati, Palazzo dei Diamanti.

Among the streets, Via delle Volte is the most characteristic and the best preserved as far as 14-15th century Ferrara is concerned, while Corso Ercole I d'Este is the main road full of wonderful 15th century palaces. The house of the famous poet Ludovico Ariosto is worth visiting too.
