CITY GUIDES
CAGLIARI
| The "city of the sun", lying on its wonderful gulf, sums up all the
history and traditions of Sardinia, by being its capital. It has very ancient Phoenician-Punic origins and it preserves still nowadays impressive remains of the Roman period, such as the great Amphitheater, dating back to 2nd century A.D. entirely dug up into the rock and the peculiar Cave of the Viper, a Roman tomb. But the city skyline is characterized by the 15th century Pisan towers and the mighty Castle with its outstanding position. The historical districts, clustered around the old Aragonese fortress, maintain the original medieval aspect and allow panoramic views of rare beauty on the city and its very lively port. A great number of folk, sports and cultural events; the museums, especially the Archeological
Museum; the large beach of Poetto, one of the most beautiful in Sardinia; the tourist
harbor, among the most important in Italy for sailing; and an extraordinarily mild climate
all over the year, make Cagliari one of the most attractive and interesting towns in
Italy.
