CITY GUIDES
BOLZANO
| Bolzano is the northernmost Italian-speaking town and the southernmost
German-speaking town. This blend is its main feature and it allowed Bolzano to become the
meeting-place of two different worlds, the Latin world and the German world. This meeting
(sometimes more a clash than a meeting!) can be a very rewarding experience for the
visitor. The most important square in town is Piazza Walther, overlooking
the beautiful gothic Cathedral. Not far away it is the Church of the Black Friars
(Domenicani) containing St. John Chapel with precious frescoes. Beautiful buildings
surround also piazza delle Erbe, the fruit-market place admired by Goethe during his
journey in Italy. It is adorned on a side by the 18th century Fountain of Neptune. On the
contrary the narrow via dei Portici is the place where the old merchant character of the
town is most easily perceived. Here the shops are very elegant and enliven the historical
setting and the 15-18 century typical houses. |
