CITY GUIDES
BOLOGNA
| The most important features and the symbols themselves of Bologna are two towers:
Asinelli tower and Garisenda tower. They dominate the city center, memories of the
brightest period in Bologna's history when the towers soaring into the sky were nearly two
hundred. That is why Bologna was called a "many-towered city". But Bologna has other nicknames: "Fat" because of its dishes, "Learned" for its university, the oldest in Europe, "Red" for the color of its roofs and walls. A very ancient town, Bologna had its golden age during the age of the Italian city-states in the Middle Ages. The city center is full of churches such as Saint Petronius, Saint James the
Elder, Saint Dominic, Saint Francis and the Metropolitan, the city cathedral, monuments
and noble palaces, impressive fountains like the one of Neptune, usually considered among
the finest in the 16th century. Arcades, narrow and colorful lanes with old shops give it
a matchless charm.
