CITY GUIDES
BERGAMO
![]()
| It is the birthplace of the composer Gaetano Donizetti and of the character of
Harlequin, born in the Italian "commedia dell'arte". It is divided into two towns: "High Bergamo", -old , silent, full of historical memories,- and "Low Bergamo" -the modern town, heart of economical life. It is possible to get to the high town by cable car, but the main access is through Saint Augustin gate, one of the four gates which open in the huge 16th century walls encircling the ancient town. The panoramic walk on the ramparts along Viale delle Mura is a must. There are many art monuments worth visiting: Piazza Vecchia, the Cathedral, the
Romanesque basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the baptistery; the Colleoni Chapel, the
Crotte Botanical Gardens, all located in the very heart of High Town.
