There are 150 golf courses in Italy, comprised of both 9-hole and 27-hole facilities. For the most part,
these are private courses which accept guests, provided they have an official handicap. It's necessary
to book a tee-off in advance. Tournaments are generally held on Saturdays and Sundays, so it's wise to
call ahead to inquire as to if and when there might be an opening. The majority of Italian golf courses
are concentrated in the North, though lovely courses are scattered from one end of the peninsula to
the other, adding to the attractions of cities famous throughout the world. A range of backdrops are
provided by mountains or sea, a volcano or ancient ruins, lakes or fragrant plains. The location of
the various tee-off positions determines whether the nature of the game is destined to be more
frenzied or relaxed. It was very difficult to select just ten courses, but those listed here are
certainly among the very best in terms of layout, natural surroundings and availability of
interesting side-trips in the vicinity.
