SUNDAY

Morning: Terme di Casciana

The thermal bath facility has managed a perfectly-balanced combination of yesteryear's best and today's technology.
Not only has the Caffè delle Terme been preserved, but the also the structure's impressive 19th-century neoclassic façade. The gracious halls have retained their gold and fine plaster work, their frescoes and elegant staircases.

The new sections are elegant as well, spacious and comfortable. A circular entry leads into the two curving corridors to the bath areas. Activities include mudpacks, showers, roman baths, wraps, aerosol theapy, hydroponic therapy and lymph drainage.

Other rooms offer every imaginable type of massage, from shiatsu to lymph manipulation, while a beauty center provides facials, manicures, pedicures and various techniques of depilation.
Fitness training is available in the gym, which offers yoga and light gymnastics, bicycles and rowing machines.

Naturally, of course, the shining stars of the facility are the two flowing water pools: 500 meters of water jets, fountains, hydromassage, water falls and counter-current swimming.

Afternoon: Volterra

Heading for back after a relaxing massage and refreshing thermal bath, we treated ourselves to a walk through the alleyways of Volterra, an enchanting town permeated by 3000 years of history. It's possible to discover traces of any one of Volterra's past lives which contributed to its emmersion as a city of art.

The city wall is a relic of the Etruscan age, along with the impressive Porta all'Arco, the necropoli dei Marmini and a number of archeological artifacts preserved in the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci. The Teatro di Vallebona, dates back to the Augustan Empire and bears witness to the city's prominence in the Roman period.
It is the Medieval Age, however, which is most palpable in the present-day city, owing not only to the inner city wall, but also due to its layout, its narrow lanes, its palazzi, the towers, its churches. Indeed the Renaissance has left a strong impression as well, but did nothing to alter the underlying Midieval atmosphere.
Of the Renaissance period, perhaps the most noteable landmarks are the superb palazzi Minucci Solaini, Incontri-Viti and Inghirami, the impressive Fortezza Medicea and the convent complex of San Girolamo.
The happy traveler who happens by the gelateria Chic & Shock must NOT under any circumstances pass by without stopping in for the homemade ice cream studded with fresh fruit. It is wildly aromatic, the taste is divine and the texture nearly sinful!
The shop is in the Via dei Marchesi, just before one of the many stairways surroundin the park which lead up to the park.

Evening : Pisa

Before returning to Milano, we couldn't resist the temptation of a walk through Pisa, which according to historians, traces its origins to Greeks of Aeneas. Who could be expected to forego seeing the serene Campo dei Miracoli at sunset?
In the glow of twilight, the beauty of the Duomo, Battistero and world famous tower is as bewitching as it was back in the the 11th and 13th centuries when they first graced the city's profile.
