FIRENZE: sounds of music, sounds of silence

by Marina Miari

An open-air concert in a Piazza or garden? In Firenze (which is, among other things, to host this year the 400th birthday celebration of the melodrama, born here in 1598 with the performances of "Dafne di Peri" and "Rinuccini") the Teatro Comunale (via Solferino 13, tel. 055-27791) events calendar is already filled with show dates right through the end of summer 1998.

Concert

September -April: a full seasonal program of classical music, ballet and concerts.

April 21-June 20: the 61st Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Opera and ballet are scheduled for July. Of particular note: the June 18th concert in the Piazza della Signoria and the Serata di Danza on June 20, also in the Piazza della Signoria.

July sees a production of Tchaikowsky's "Swan Lake" in the Boboli Gardens and the Soirée Balanchine at the Teatro Romano di Fiesole (also the venue for performances presented as part of Estate Fiesolana). For details, contact the APT of Fiesole (Tel: 055-598720, Fax: 055-598822).

Concert

Reservations for the Maggio Musicale can be made over the internet as of November 5th
( http://www.maggiofiorentino.com).

For details and reservations by phone, call 055-211158 or 213535, Tues.-Fri, from 9:00-13:00,14:00-17:00 / Sat. 9:00-13:00) after December 20th for the winter program, and after April 7th for information pertaining to the Maggio Musicale.

Those who prefer the sounds of silence are urged to seek out the evocative cimitero inglese in Piazza Donatello, resting place of poet Elizabeth Barret Browning. In the evenings, a walk to the Piazza Del Carmine and the Piazza Santo Spirito in the "Oltrarno" quarter is just the thing for anyone seeking respite from the daylight hours' urban noise.
