The Amalfi Coastline

Positano

This enchanting coastal village which slopes down toward the sea is presently among the trendiest of southern cities, frequented by the sort of tourists who do not detract from the charm. The long, winding road lumbers through the town, enlivened by a string of a dozen colorful boutiques selling clothes, pareos, cloth and hand-crafted sandals.
The Conca di Positano is a riot of color ending in the crystalline waters that lap at the rocks at Li Galli, the mythical island of the Sirens bought by Rudolf Nureyev in1988. Positano's main attraction, of course, are the personalities who clog the narrow lanes and adorn the stairways, courtyards and gardens. Many a famous personality has been seduced by Positano's charms; among these, John Steinbeck, who visited in 1953, followed by conductor Roman Vlad and director Franco Zeffirelli. The Zeffirelli villa has often provided the setting for the trendiest parties on the Costiera. Numbered among the director's famous guests are Lawrence Olivier, Placido Domingo, Liz Taylor and Liza Minelli.
