On the Golden Lake
by Marina Miari

Como lake

Languid and slow, the rhythms of the lake, rhythms of a boat afloat, rhythms of a slow-moving automobile cruising the shoreline. It is a throbbing presence felt thoughout the area's countless tiny villages which hint at the glorious past of the Belle Epoque; a past evidenced today by grand hotels and sumptuous villas surrounded by gardens flourishing in the glorious climate.

It is, of course, the rhythm of Lago di Como, golden cradle of tranquility granted harried celebrities and tired tourists, a gleaming mirror reflecting the Grigne and the Resegone mountains. The city of Como, internationally famous for its silk fabrics, provides a charming ante-chamber to the lake.
DolceVita would like to propose an itinerary to ensure you a visit both stimulating and relaxing at any time of year.

Tranquility and calm are the order of the day in this stretch of Lombardy, but there's a great deal to see and do. Permanent points of interest range from the Rockefeller Foundation to the enchanting gardens at Villa Carlotta and the Villa Versace in Moltrasio.

The Itinerary

Leaving Como and driving in a westerly direction will take you to Cernobbio (approx. 5 km), site of the renowned Villa d'Este. This is the first of a series of villas surrounded by parks or large gardens.
In Moltrasio (approx. 7 km), one of the many villas of note is that of the late Gianni Versace. Continuing along the narrow but scenic shore road, you'll sight Argegno and the lake's only island, tiny Comacina. A bit further on, you'll come across the Ossuccio bell-tower, famous for its unique shape.
The next stop is Lenno (27 km) and the Villa Balbianello, followed by the Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo (31 km) and the elegant Cadenabbia holiday resort. From Tremezzo, it's possible to take a short ferry ride to Bellagio (30 km from Como).
An alternative tour of the lake follows the eastern shoreline to Bellagio through Blevio and Torno (7 km), and past the Villa Pliniana, (1.5 km) which hosted artists and writers well into the 1800's.
