The "Alto Marchesato Crotonese" refers to the region, historically part of the upper part of the Marchese of Crotone. One of GAL's salient goals is to "establish stable tourism", and one of the neat things about the organization is their desire to develop region's particular specialties. For the Alto Marchesato Crotonese, GAL has supported the development of farmers, both organic and non, agriturismi, high quality wine, olive oil, cheese and meat products, the development of walking trails and the education of those interested in entering the field of tourism. In Santa Severina, GAL and WWF have teamed together to establish a program dedicated to scholastic environmental education, with office in Santa Severina. Currently things are well underway, trails are marked and the first scholastic programs are being organized.
The owner of a venerable agriturismo, a female director of a tour operation and an entrepreneur just arrived from the North, may not appear to have much in common, but they are each working toward the establishment of a new Calabria. A Calabria with year-round tourism, with farms that sell their products worldwide and other local businesses that, following GAL's example, capitalize on what makes the land and its people unique. All three employ, or in the case of the new entrepreneur, will employ local people in various sectors. In summary, these three individuals represent the hope of Calabria: The Dattilo Azienda Agrituristica, owned
and managed by the industrious Roberto Ceraudo, is one of the finest
agriturismi in the region. The farm is set in a sublimely beautiful
location, amid the olive trees and vineyard-covered hills above the
sea at Stróngoli. Mr. Ceraudo has set an example for the region,
with his entirely organic farm production - his excellent wine, oil
and pecorino cheese among homemade products to be sampled. Dattilo
is a perfect base for the zone, for those who wish to explore the
length of the region or simply savor its finer pleasures while relaxing
at Dattilo's scenic pool.
Mimma Scida is a native of Crotone who after university in
Rome decided to take a plunge into the Calabria travel business. Eventually
she started up her own business, which today offers a wide range of
tours throughout the region, from gastronomic and wine tours to cultural,
folkloric and special festival itineraries. She is optimistic in her
ability to drum up new interest in Calabria both in foreign countries
and within Italy, though it has not been easy - even many Italians
have historically snubbed Calabria for vacations in Sicily or Spain.
Yet, thanks to the work of Ms. Scida and other entrepreneurs like
her, the region of Calabria is finally, deservedly getting its name
across. The 32-year-old entrepreneur Francesco Iorno may have been
born and raised in Como, but his heart belonged in Crotone, the land
of his ancestors, where he has recently moved to develop his family's
estate. Mr. Iorno is in the process of building an agriturismo on
this land, which is located on the lovely sea plain near Crotone;
he envisions an active resort, where guests will have the opportunity
to explore the sea coast on horseback. While the agriturismo is under
development, this summer with his aunt Stefania Maiorano he will open
a bed & breakfast on a magnificent nearby property. This land
is located right on the edge of Capo Cimiti, where there are ruins
of a Roman villa, four Greek columns still intact underwater and great
swimming and snorkeling in a protected marine reserve.
