Residences
in the region range from luxurious villas to beautifully restored
farmhouses, both set amid age-old vineyards and prestigious gardens.
Numerous farm-stay B&B's are scattered throughout the region as well,
promising a truly individual holiday experience: the "Bed & Breakfast
& More" in Lecchi in Chianti, for example. Another valuable tip is
a bit more off the beaten track, suspended between heaven and earth,
amid the lacy boughs of countless trees, caught in a perfect network
of vines. And where is this country paradise? The CASAFRASSI in Castellina
in Chianti, which was a year ago was made a member of the Relais du
Silense, a chain of very fine hotels which prizes peace and tranquillity
above all things.... Sound good?
The gracious proprietor, an architect who offered his dissertation
on the 16th-century complex, is willing and able to offer guests detailed
information on the somewhat severe stone palazzo, so wisely and tastefully
restored. The hotel's refined clientele is accommodated in 16 rooms
over a ground floor restaurant and made up of a large dining hall
and several smaller rooms.
The property can be easily reached by the Chiantigiana,
or statale highway which runs all the way through "Chiantishire".
A Cypress-lined drive leads up to the villa, opening into a view of
the majestic structure at the top. The carefully maintained gardens,
the road to the tennis courts and the swimming pool is just to the
left.
To the right of the palazzo, suspending in serenity, are the cloister
and chapel, and the former servants' quarters which have been converted
into an additional 9 rooms. Further on, another section of the complex
offers a more rustic, traditional farm-stay sort of hospitality. The
surrounding green extends as far as the eye can see, and your host
will gladly explain which wines are produced from which of the countless
vines. The detailed information only serves to whet your appetite
and increase your delight at finding them on your table accompanied
by fine Tuscan specialties!
