An hour north and inland from Naples, among the
olive and vine covered hills between Caserta and Benevento, lies the well-preserved
medieval town of Sant'Agata dei Goti.
Driving through the town will give one an appreciation for just how well
preserved the town is - very narrow streets and tight corners just waiting
to give cars a little momento. On foot however the town may be explored
much more enjoyably. The bridge over the Martorano stream, which overlooks
the entire town, is the perfect place to be at sunset when the buildings
turn a slight shade of pink. Be sure to have a glass of local wine in
hand to witness the event: the local grapes produce outstanding red and
white wines.
One of more venerable producers, Mustilli, offers excellent whites from
the Falanghina and Greco grapes and reds from Piedirosso and Aglianico.
The Primicerio Greco di Sant'Agata dei Goti owes its remarkable, distinct
taste to the position and attentive selection of the grapes that make
up the wine. Mustilli's 1997 Cesco di Nece Aglianico di Sant'Agata dei
Goti is Aglianico at its best: with a harmonic nose, a full bodied, equilibrated
taste, this wine from the most antique grape of Campania is yet another
superb example of that legendary year.
