Palinuro

The Parco Nazionale del Cilento encompasses a large swath of wild terrain in southern Campania. The park ranges from craggy mountains in interior Campania to an equally rugged shoreline. Trekking here is excellent but due to the heat recommended in the spring or fall only; Rifugio Cervati is an ideal base in the mountains, from which one may ascend several of the surrounding peaks like Monte Cervati (1898 m). Palinuro is another fine place for walking, to the edge of the Capo Palinuro. This seaside village is perhaps better known for its sea caves - take a boat tour that skirts the steep coast and enters into some of the caves, which have been named. Be sure to hit the Grotta Azzurra (Azure Cave) at the right time, when the refracted outside light turns the cave a brilliant turquoise. As part of one of the tours, there is a brief stop at a lovely beach, accessible only on foot. The water here, the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a crystal clear turquoise. Other beaches in the area are well worth checking out, such as those near Marina di Camerota.
