The air travel network in Milan is organized into three sectors: Linate
is mainly a city airport, while Malpensa is used by intercontinental,
international, national and charter flights; Bergamo-Orio al Serio also
accommodates international, national and charter flights. Flights arriving
in Milano directly from the U.S. land at Malpensa: 46 km (28 miles)
west of the city which can be reached both by taxi (fare approx. 100
Euro) or by bus (fare 6 Euro) or Malpensa Express train (9 Euro) in
about an hour.
The completion of the new Malpensa Terminal 2000
has siphoned off a good deal of traffic from congested Linate, while
connections with Malpensa have been improved.
To and From Malpensa
The bus lines are: Malpensa-Milano Centrale main station
direct, every half-hour; Malpensa-Lampugnano (metropolitan line 1)-Fiera-P.za
Castello (city center) hourly; in P.za Castello, it is possible to catch
an hourly bus, the number 73, for Linate Airport, as well as a direct
connection to Malpensa which leaves twice daily. (information: 02-40099280).
Trains are perhaps the best way to travel to Malpensa
Airport. Malpensa Express trains leave from the Cadorna station in Milano.

To and From Linate
Linate can be reached by taxi (fare approx. 15 Euro) or by bus number
73 which leaves from P.za S.Babila every 10 minutes during the day (fare
1 Euro). A private bus line departs every 20 minutes for Linate from
the Milano Centrale train station (fare 3 Euro). Travel time by taxi
is about 15 minutes, by bus half an hour. In the area around Linate,
there are several hotels with a shuttle buses.
To and From Bergamo-Orio al Serio
Bergamo Airport is located 50 km (31 miles) east of Milano and 6 km
(4 miles) south of Bergamo. The national airlines serving the airport
are Alitalia to Roma-Fiumicino and Azzurra Air to Roma-Ciampino, London-City
and Paris-Charles de Gaulle. It is reachable by trains departing hourly
from Stazioni Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi, with a brief
ride to the actual airport by bus.
Travelling time should be about an hour by train and 10 minutes by Bus.
One bus leaving the airport will leave you at Piazza Castello, while
the Società Autostradale bus departing from the airport hourly will
take you to the train station in Bergamo. Public bus transportation
leaves for the airport from this same point. Bergamo is an important
junction for several air freight companies such as, DHL and UPS. The
airport is situated in one of the richest zones in all Italy. The construction
of additional railway and road connections will enable the airport to
work to capacity.
To and From Lugano
The Swiss airport at Lugano, some 70 km (43 miles) from Milano, is not
subject to Milano's dense winter fogs and the strikes which plague Italian
airports, making it very attractive to commercial travellers from Milano,
Como, Varese and Novara. Lugano is connected to Milano, by the international
railway line Gottardo, leaving Milano's Stazione Centrale hourly. The
journey takes one hour and 20 minutes. Arrivals at the Lugano station
can proceed to the airport by taxi, in about 10 minutes. A hotel with
pool is located inside the terminal and is open year-round. The airport
houses Duty Free shops, a bank and a Restaurant/Bar which provides outdoor
seating in summer months.

Linate and Malpensa offer a variety of passenger services: Duty Free;
pharmacy; restaurants and bars; boutiques; new stands and book shops;
medical assistance; veterinary facilities; banks; car rental agencies;
Business Center (Linate) and a nondenominational chapel open to all
faiths. Basic services remain open 24 hours.
